SALUTES
Veterans of the Vietnam War
Today we honor those brave souls who served in the Vietnam War over a half-century ago. The members of the armed forces who served our country from March 8, 1965, to March 29, 1973, earned the utmost respect of a grateful nation.
The Vietnam War was one of the longest and bloodiest military conflicts in United States history.
Those that made it home were forever changed by their experiences.
With the chilling backdrop of the Cold War and tensions at an all-time high on the Indochinese Peninsula, joining the military could not have been an easy decision. China and Russia were backing North Vietnam with funding, supplies, and support troops. Yet millions of Americans answered the call and put their lives on the line against the Soviet Union and her allies.

Vietnam veterans took their experience from the war home and used it to shape America into the great nation it is today. Hard work, dedication, and perseverance in the face of life-threatening challenges made this great generation of military personnel the backbone of our country. These fine men and women became some of our best architects, carpenters, doctors, firefighters, lawyers, mechanics, nurses, police, politicians, and every other noble trade.
Airmen, coast guardsman, marines, sailors, and soldiers, we salute you. We thank you for your service and hold you in the highest regard.
