National Airborne Day

National Airborne Day

President George W. Bush proclaimed August 16 as National Airborne Day to honor our nation’s paratroopers. On this important date we celebrate our Airborne Forces and honor the military servicepeople who jump out airplanes to defend our freedom.

On August 16, 1940, an Army platoon completed our military’s first test parachute jump, and a new era began.

The Army’s 82nd Infantry Division was redesignated as the 82nd Airborne Division on August 15, 1942, creating the first U. S. airborne force.

U. S. paratroopers have since been crucial to our wars in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Afghanistan.

Thank You For Your Service!

We honor these brave souls for their tremendous service to our country.
