Desertification and Drought Day
2025
By Katelin Kukk
Desertification and drought are some of the most pressing environmental challenges on this planet. Hunger, poverty, and water scarcity are all a scary reality for those in areas with degraded land. This day focuses on the urgency to tackle this issue and to come together as a community to find ways to prevent drought. In 1994, the United Nations created this day to remind us that land degradation neutrality is possible.
This year, on June 17th, the Republic of Colombia will host Desertification Day and address its issues and solutions. They will also highlight the important role of a healthy land that can provide jobs, food, and water. Some ways to prevent desertification include protecting vegetative cover, planting trees, using land for farming, and more.
Get out there and educate yourself on how to protect the soil and learn about the impact desertification has on the world! Spread awareness to friends and family about Combat Desertification and Drought Day!
