A Presidents’ Day Special
Franklin D. Roosevelt
The Great Depression was the most devastating global financial crisis in modern history. The stock market crash, drought, famine, and record unemployment hit the United States hard. Many Americans lost their jobs, farms, homes, and, for some, their lives. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President at a time when our nation was in dire need of strong leadership. Roosevelt’s New Deal brought much-needed jobs and financial reforms.
Conflicts were growing in Europe as the United States clawed its way out of the depression. Then the Japanese attacked the U.S. military bases in Pearl Harbor and we were at war. A world war, no less. FDR focused the manpower and resources of the United States to prepare for and fight enemies around the globe. Unfortunately, he passed away unexpectedly on April 12, 1945, less than a month before allied forces achived victory in Europe.
FDR led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II, taking USA from despair in 1932 to the brink of victory and emergence as a global superpower in 1945.
Today we honor Franklin D. Roosevelt for his leadership through our nation’s darkest hours.
Thank you, Franklin Delano Roosevelt
