The Giant Sea Bass

The giant black sea bass (Stereolepis gigas) is an extra-large wreckfish found off the coast of California and in the Gulf of California.

They grow to be over seven feet long, weigh over five hundred pounds, and live to be over seventy years old.

These marine giants are the apex predators of the kelp forests in their range, preying on invertebrates and fish.

The once abundant giant sea bass is now critically endangered from overfishing. This rare species has been protected for over forty years but it remains unclear whether its population is recovering from near extinction.
