A World Whale Day Special
Beluga Whales
The Delphinapterus lecuras or the beluga whale is a highly unique marine mammal. They are native to the Arctic but migrate South in the fall when the waters become too frigid. One of their most distinct features is their big bulbous forehead called a melon, which can change shape to create facial expressions. While the beluga whale may not be the most attractive animal, their personality more than makes up for it. They are nicknamed the “canaries of the sea” because of their vocal nature; chirping, whistling, and squealing away to others.

Unfortunately, beluga whales are near threatened due to human activities but are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Conservation organizations are working tirelessly to help protect these incredible species and bring awareness to the public. With more research and education to better understand these creatures, there is hope for their survival.
