Preparing for Extremes

Summer-Ready

With less than a month to go before the first day of summer, it’s time to start preparing for the hottest season. Whether you’re doing yardwork, climbing down into a manhole, or climbing a landfill, extreme weather events are dangerous. Summer provides unique challenges that can be met by diligent planning for those who prefer to take a safer approach.

Forecasts from government agencies and private meteorologists call for El Niño to strengthen as we head into this summer. Above average temperatures and dryness are predicted across much of North America. Many regions not facing increased heat expect downpours and flooding.

Intense heat threatens people, pets, livestock, industrial processes, stored goods, and machinery. Higher temperatures and dryness raise the risk of crop damage and wildfires. Heavy rainfall and floods can cause damage to agriculture, municipal infrastructure, industrial structures, and residences.

Getting Ready

When extreme weather is predicted, it is best for individuals, municipalities, commercial enterprises, and industrial plants to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you get started.
• Air Conditioning. Service air conditioning systems before summer.

• Emergency Kits. Add extreme weather supplies such as instant cold packs and empty sandbags to your emergency kits.

• Engine Coolant. Flush coolant systems and replace coolant.

• Mechanical Cooling. Provide fans and/or misting systems.

• Monitor Programs. Monitor employees and coworkers for signs of overexposure.

• Personal Protective Equipment. Be prepared with shade gear, rain gear, and sun block over and above a projects standard required PPE.

• Roof, Shade, and Shelter. protection from rain, shade, and cooling shelters can provide relief from intense heat.

• Water and Electrolytes. Businesses should provide hydration products. Individuals should bring their own.

• Work Schedules. Plan proactively to adjust schedules around times of intense heat or rain.

Summer can be dangerous, true. Yet it’s a great time to be outside working in the fresh air. Be prepared for extreme heat, downpours, and flooding, and have a good time! Enjoy this summer, on the job and off!
