Saguaro National Park lies in the mountains of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, a unique semi-arid ecological region with two rainy seasons. Saguaro N. P. is named after the Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea), an enormous cactus recognized worldwide as a symbol of the wild spirit of the American Southwest. The park is home to a variety of different plants and animals, including twenty-four more species of cacti.

Saguaro Cactus

Carnegiea gigantea is a rare cactus that is extremely slow growing, with a rate of only a fraction of an inch per year.

Still, saguaros are enormous cactus that are similar to trees in that they can grow to over fifty feet tall and live over two hundred years!

These unique cacti are only found in their native Sonoran Desert, where the temperature, rainfall, and soil are ideal for their growth.
