Managing Spring Stormwater

Spring has arrived and with it a stacked list of operations and maintenance projects for managers everywhere. Runoff water management has to be on top the list for any plant with a stormwater collection system. Springtime brings higher flows from melting snow and increased rain, while clogs, erosion, and nutrient pollution poses added threats to stormwater systems.

Following are some stormwater maintenance tasks that can help your plant run smoother.

  • Clean gutters and downspouts to remove yard waste and debris to prevent foundation pooling.
  • Clear storm drain grates and inlets of litter and waste to prevent flooded roadways.
  • Check rain barrels and cisterns for debris and leaks.
  • Inspect retention pond banks for erosion and floors for sediment accumulation.
  • Inspect outflows, waste screens, and spillways for clogs or damage.
  • Service and test stormwater diverters, gates, pumps, valves, and sensors to ensure adequate operation.

This short stormwater maintenance list can help your spring flow and give you peace of mind as you tackle other spring cleaning and warm-weather projects.

Keep your stormwater running!
